In February 2020, Dr. Vernon J. Hurte joined Towson University as the University’s chief student affairs officer. With nearly 20 years of experience in higher education, in his current role, he provides vision, strategic direction and leadership for the Division of Student Affairs which offers a comprehensive range of student programs and services including the Career Center, Counseling Center, Student Outreach and Support, Health Center, Housing & Residence Life, Campus Recreation, Student Activities, Fraternity & Sorority Life, New Student & Family Programs, Student Success Programs, Civic Engagement & Social Responsibility, the Office of Student Accountability & Restorative Practices, Military & Veterans Center and Events & Conference Services.

Prior to arriving at TU, Dr. Hurte served as Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at Iowa State University, where he provided strategic leadership for sixteen departments and functional areas, including the Academic Success Center; Hixson Opportunity Awards; International Students and Scholars; Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success; Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity; Multicultural Student Affairs; National Student Exchange; Parent and Family Programs; Sorority and Fraternity Engagement; Student Accessibility Services; Student Assistance; Student Conduct; Student Legal Services; TRIO Student Support Services Program; Veterans Center; and the Writing and Media Center. In addition, Dr. Hurte also chaired two university-wide committees (the Sexual Misconduct Leadership Committee and the Critical Incident Readiness Team), and also served as a member of the Faculty Senate’s Student Affairs Committee, the Advisory Board for the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, and the University’s Student Success Council. Before joining the Student Affairs team at Iowa State, Dr. Hurte spent 13 years at The College of William & Mary, most recently as Assistant to the Vice President and Senior Associate Dean of Students at The College of William & Mary.

In addition to his professional practice, Vernon has served as a consultant to several institutions on topics such as staff support and engagement and holistic student success strategies. As a leader in the field of student affairs and the local community, Dr. Hurte served on the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Region IV-East Executive Board and the Board of Directors for ACCESS, a nonprofit offering services for survivors of abuse and those in housing crisis in Central Iowa. Dr. Hurte also served as a member of NASPA’s Future of Student Affairs Task Force from 2021-2022. Currently, he serves on the Governing Board of the Baltimore Collegetown Network, the Board of Directors for Building STEPS, and the Board of Directors for the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education.

Dr. Hurte earned the Bachelor of Science in psychology from Bowie State University, the Ph.D. in Education from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a M.Div. from Virginia Union University. He is also the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including Iowa State University’s Green Dot Change Agent Award (2018), William & Mary’s Chamber-Reid Award for Professional Excellence (2016), and recognition in 2010 as one of InSpire Magazine’s “Top 40 Inspirers in America.”
