Dr. Sammy J. Spann has worked in higher education for over twenty years. He was named Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at The University of Toledo in 2022 after having served as interim in the role. He oversees the Office of Student Conduct, the Student Union, Office of Student Advocacy, University Counseling Center, Toledo Excel, Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, Office of Multicultural Student Success, Student Recreation Center, Career Services, Commuter and Greek Life.

Dr. Spann does numerous presentations every year and has traveled extensively in over 72 countries around the world. He has attended Harvard Business School, High Potential Leadership Training, Millennium Leadership Institute and serves as a Board Member Blue Key Honor Society, Big Brother, Big Sisters, Toledo Early College to name a few.

He holds a Ph.D. in Special Education/Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Toledo, an M. A. in Special Education, Severe Behaviors and Autism from the University of Northern Iowa, and a B. A. in Infant and Child Development from Fort Valley State University. Dr. Spann’s publications appeared on Liberian Studies Journal and Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities.

He enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters.
